The primary use of diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (commonly abbreviated as DTPA) is as a metal ion chelating agent that is more potent than EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid). With two ethylene chains and three amino groups, it provides up to eight coordination sites. The chelates it forms with most cations are more stable than the corresponding chelates formed by EDTA, which is why it is vividly referred to as a “super-strong crab claw.”
Due to this powerful chelating ability, its primary applications are extremely broad and can be summarized as follows:
Medicine and Life Sciences
Heavy Metal Detoxification: As a chelating agent, it is used in the treatment of radioisotope and heavy metal (such as lead and cadmium) poisoning to help eliminate these harmful metal ions from the body.
Laboratory and Biochemical Research: As a highly efficient chelating titrant, it is used in analytical chemistry to titrate molybdenum, sulfates, rare earth metals, copper, and other substances. In biochemistry experiments, it can be used to chelate metal ions to study their effects on biological processes.
Industry and Household Chemicals
Water Treatment: It effectively chelates scale-forming ions such as calcium, magnesium, and iron in water, preventing scale buildup in boilers and pipes, and is also used in wastewater treatment.
Paper and Textiles: In the paper industry, it serves as a stabilizer, synergist, and defoamer for pulp bleaching (e.g., hydrogen peroxide bleaching), improving bleaching quality and eliminating surface defects in paper; in textile printing and dyeing, it removes metal ions from water to enhance dyeing results.
Other Industries: It is also used as a component in developing solutions for color photographic materials, a decolorizing agent for acrylonitrile stock, and an additive in electroplating solutions.
Soil Remediation: It is used as a heavy metal chelating agent for contaminated soil, forming stable complexes with heavy metals such as iron, manganese, and copper in the soil to reduce their toxicity.
Food and Personal Care
Food Additives: It can serve as a chelating agent and stabilizer, helping to stabilize metal ions in food, prevent oxidative spoilage, and extend shelf life.
Cosmetics: When added to cosmetics, it prevents oxidative spoilage caused by metal ions.
